A 35 year old man was beaten to death by angry members of the public on suspicion that he stole a motorcycle.
Two others who were with him escaped.
The incident occurred in Nyatieko Location, Kisii County.
It is said that the three suspects broke into one Geoffrey Momanyi’s house with the intention of stealing his motorcycle.
He managed to raise an alarm for assistance and members of the public promptly responded, venting their anger on one of them.
Angry members of the public started beating up the boda boda robber.
Nyatieko Chief Lawrence Omari said that he was alerted by the members of the public.
Police officers arrived at the scene but were not able to rescue the suspect who had been overwhelmed by the angry mob’s beating.
Confirming the incident, Kisii County Police Commander Martin Kibet said that the deceased had a deep cut in the head and died on the spot.
“As much as there’s motorcycle stealing, the public does not have a right to kill suspects in this manner,’’ he said.
He called upon members of the public not to take the law in their hands.
“They should inform the police or hand over the suspects to us so that they are dealt with within the law,” he said.
Mr Kibet said that they were looking for the two suspects who were still at large.
The body of the deceased was taken to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH) mortuary, awaiting for an autopsy as investigations got underway.
